Retrieve old Larson & Toubro Limited (L&T) Shares from IEPF by Kinheritance

Have you recently come across old Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) share certificates in family records? Or perhaps your L&T shares are missing from your demat account, with dividends left unclaimed for years? In many such cases, these investments may have been transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF).

The good news is that shareholders, nominees, legal heirs, and successors are eligible to recover shares and dividends from the IEPF Authority. However, the process requires careful steps — tracing the investment, preparing accurate documents, filing Form IEPF‑5 online, and coordinating with the company and its Registrar & Transfer Agent (RTA).

At Kinheritance, we simplify this journey. Our team helps families and investors navigate the paperwork, compliance requirements, and communication with companies, ensuring the recovery process is handled with clarity and efficiency.

ABOUT Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T):

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) is one of India’s largest and most respected multinational conglomerates, with a legacy that dates back to 1938. Founded in Mumbai by two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro, the company began as a small trading firm and quickly evolved into a powerhouse in engineering, construction, manufacturing, and technology services. Over the decades, L&T has played a pivotal role in building India’s infrastructure — from power plants, highways, and metro systems to landmark projects like the Statue of Unity and the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Today, L&T operates across more than 50 countries, with diversified businesses spanning construction, heavy engineering, defence, nuclear energy, IT services, and financial services. Its subsidiaries, including L&T Finance Holdings, L&T Technology Services, and Mindtree, further strengthen its global presence. Known for innovation, resilience, and nation-building, L&T continues to symbolize India’s industrial strength and global competitiveness.

Why Are Old L&T Shares Transferred to IEPF?

Under Section 124 of the Companies Act, 2013, dividends declared by a company that remain unpaid or unclaimed for seven consecutive years must be transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF). In such cases, the underlying shares linked to these dividends are also moved to the IEPF Authority.

This transfer, however, does not mean that shareholders permanently lose their rights. The rightful owner, nominee, or legal heir can still reclaim the shares and dividends by filing Web‑Form IEPF‑5 and submitting proof of entitlement.

Why L&T Investments Are Often Difficult to Trace

Old investments in Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) can be particularly challenging to recover due to several factors:

  • Physical share certificates issued decades ago, often misplaced or damaged.
  • Folios registered at outdated addresses, making communication with the company difficult.
  • Changes in shareholder names or residential status not updated in company records.
  • Joint holdings, where one shareholder may have passed away.
  • Shares held by parents or grandparents, often unknown to heirs.
  • Unclaimed dividends accumulated over several years.
  • Corporate actions such as bonus issues, stock splits, or demergers that complicate tracing.
  • Lost or misplaced certificates, requiring additional documentation for recovery.

The transfer of old L&T shares to the IEPF is a regulatory safeguard, but recovery is possible with the right documentation and process. By understanding the reasons behind these transfers and the challenges in tracing old investments, shareholders and heirs can take timely steps to reclaim their rightful assets.

L&T’s investor information also records several historical bonus issues, including bonus issues in 2006, 2008, 2013 and 2017. Therefore, the number of shares originally purchased may not be the same as the current entitlement after applicable corporate actions.

How to Check Whether Your L&T Shares Are in IEPF

Before starting the claim process, you should confirm the status of the shares and dividends. Begin by collecting every available record, including old certificates, dividend warrants, folio numbers, demat statements, correspondence from L&T or KFin Technologies, and documents belonging to the original shareholder.

You can then take the following steps:

  1. Search the IEPF and company records using the shareholder’s name, folio number and company details.
  2. Check the list of shares and dividends transferred by Larsen & Toubro Limited to IEPF.
  3. Contact L&T’s RTA, KFin Technologies Limited, to request an Entitlement Letter.
  4. Compare the entitlement details with your old certificates, family records and demat statements.
  5. Verify whether the claimant is the original shareholder, nominee, legal heir or authorised representative.

L&T states that claimants should contact KFin Technologies for an Entitlement Letter before filing Web-Form IEPF-5. The letter generally contains important information about the shares and dividends transferred to IEPF and helps the claimant complete the form correctly.

Documents Required to Reclaim L&T Shares

The exact documents may differ depending on whether the claim is made by the original shareholder, nominee, legal heir or successor. A typical claim may require the following:

  • Copy of PAN card.
  • Proof of identity and address.
  • Passport-size photograph, wherever required.
  • Original share certificates, if available.
  • Folio number and old investment records.
  • Entitlement Letter from L&T or its RTA.
  • Client Master List (CML) or demat account proof.
  • Cancelled cheque or bank account proof.
  • Signed copy of Web-Form IEPF-5 and its acknowledgment.
  • Indemnity Bond and Advance Stamped Receipt, as applicable.
  • Death certificate of the original shareholder in a legal-heir claim.
  • Succession certificate, probate, letter of administration or other succession documents, wherever applicable.
  • No-objection declarations or affidavits from other legal heirs, when required.
  • Notarised or attested documents, depending on the claim structure and applicable requirements.

If the original shareholder is deceased, the legal heir must establish a clear connection with the deceased shareholder. A claim may become more complex when there is no nomination, multiple legal heirs, incomplete succession documentation or a mismatch in names.

Applicants should avoid sending incomplete, inconsistent or unsigned documents. Even a small mismatch in the folio number, name, address, PAN, bank account or demat details can lead to queries and delays.

Step-by-Step Process to Recover L&T Shares from IEPF

  1. Trace the investment

Start with old share certificates, dividend documents, bank records, income-tax files and family papers. Note the shareholder’s full name, folio number, certificate number, distinctive numbers and the number of shares shown on the certificate.

If you do not have the certificate, do not assume that the investment is lost. Company and RTA records may still help identify the holding.

  1. Obtain the Entitlement Letter

Contact KFin Technologies Limited, the RTA for Larsen & Toubro Limited, and request the Entitlement Letter. The RTA’s records can help confirm the number of shares and dividends transferred to IEPF.

According to the L&T investor FAQ, KFin Technologies can be contacted . The company also provides its investor-services information and claim instructions through its official website

  1. Open or activate a demat account

IEPF shares are generally returned in electronic form. The claimant should therefore have an active demat account with accurate name, PAN and bank details.

For inherited shares, the demat account may need to be opened in the name of the eligible claimant. If the claimant is an NRI, additional banking, KYC, tax and repatriation considerations may apply. It is advisable to obtain guidance from the relevant bank, Depository Participant or qualified professional before submitting the claim.

  1. File Web-Form IEPF-5

After verifying the entitlement, file Web-Form IEPF-5 through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and IEPF portal. The form requires details such as:

  • Claimant’s personal information.
  • PAN and contact details.
  • Company name and CIN, where required.
  • Folio number and share details.
  • Dividend information.
  • Demat account details.
  • Bank account information.
  • Details of the original shareholder, where the claim is made by a legal heir or successor.

After submission, an acknowledgment and Service Request Number (SRN) are generated. Preserve the SRN carefully because it is useful for tracking and correspondence.

  1. Prepare and send the physical documents

Print and sign the submitted IEPF-5 form and prepare the supporting document set. The signed acknowledgment and relevant documents must be sent to the company or its designated Nodal Officer for verification.

L&T’s published instructions identify the company’s Nodal Officer and provide an address for sending claim documents:

Deputy Nodal Officer
Larsen & Toubro Limited
L&T House, N. M. Marg
Ballard Estate, Mumbai – 400 001

Before dispatching documents, claimants should verify the latest address and requirements on the official L&T investor-services page, as company instructions may be updated.

  1. Company and RTA verification

L&T and its RTA review the claim, compare the submitted records with company data and may raise queries if information is incomplete or inconsistent. In a legal-heir claim, the company may seek additional succession documents or declarations.

This is often the most time-consuming stage because old holdings can involve multiple folios, deceased shareholders, historical corporate actions and discrepancies in names or addresses.

  1. Credit of shares and payment of dividends

If the claim is approved by the IEPF Authority, the recovered L&T shares are credited to the claimant’s demat account. Eligible unpaid dividends are paid to the approved bank account after completion of applicable verification and statutory requirements.

The final number of shares may reflect corporate actions such as bonus issues, splits or demergers. This is why it is important to verify the entitlement rather than relying only on the number printed on an old certificate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Filing IEPF Claims

Recovering old L&T shares from the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) requires precision and compliance. Even small errors can delay or jeopardize the claim. Some of the most frequent mistakes include:

  • Submitting Form IEPF‑5 prematurely without first confirming the correct entitlement.
  • Entering incorrect folio numbers or shareholder names.
  • Using a demat account with mismatched name or PAN.
  • Overlooking bonus shares or corporate‑action entitlements.
  • Sending unsigned or incomplete documents.
  • Ignoring succession requirements when claiming as a legal heir.
  • Dispatching original documents without retaining copies or proof of submission.
  • Relying on unofficial websites for company or RTA contact details.
  • Assuming NRI claims follow the same process as resident shareholder claims.

Security Advisory:

Never share OTPs, passwords, or complete banking credentials with unauthorized agents. Always verify any communication received in the name of the company, RTA, or the IEPF Authority before responding.
